About

Hello! My name is Joy Dobbs. In this site, you’ll learn information about me as a teacher and as a student. Before you dive into my professional materials, here is a little about me on a more personal note:

 I’m a very charismatic, outgoing individual who loves to make friends and loves to smile! I have two completely opposite but amazingly beautiful little girls, Kathryn and Claire. They are ages eight and six and they are my life.

I find great joy in my profession: teaching English Language Arts to 9th and 12th graders. Really, the subject is what I live for, not just the age group. The students and some of the other faculty I work with call me “The Nerd of the English Department,” and I take great pride in that! I love how my enthusiasm tends to rub off on the students where they look forward to what we are doing each day.

My goal in life is to keep my family top priority while still bettering myself physically, spiritually, and educationally. I have a few more milestones to complete before I finally take a break from education. (Maybe Retirement!)

Positions Held

  • Ninth and Twelfth Grade English Teacher, August 2010 to Current— Bismarck School District, Bismarck, Arkansas. Teaching duties include planning and implementing lessons for Pre-Advanced Placement ninth grade English classes, for regular ninth and twelfth grade English classes, and for a remedial double blocked class. Volunteered to assist the junior class sponsors. Worked weekly with B.U.G tutoring after school program. Became sponsor of ninth grade class during 2012/2013 school year.

 

  • Student Internship, January 11, 2010 to May 5, 2010—Lake Hamilton School District, Pearcy, Arkansas. Planned seventh grade lessons for three language arts classes, two of which were inclusion classes, and three reading classes. I also planned and implemented lessons for a mixture of regular and Pre-Advanced placement ninth grade classes. I utilized and implemented techniques of my acquired knowledge gained through education courses and content skills.

 

  • Volunteer Assistant, January and February of 2008 —Volunteer Jessieville School: “Project Serve” After School Program, Jessieville, Arkansas. Assisted teachers in after school activities such as quilt making, and reading to students.

 

  • English Tutor for ESL students, August 2007 to May 2008—Volunteer National Park Community College, Hot Springs, Arkansas. Tutored Asian students in composition skills.

Computer Skills

Skilled in computer software and programs such as Microsoft Word, Publisher, Power Point, One Note, and Excel, Windows Movie Maker, Audacity, and FLIP software.

Proficient in Educational Technology with the instruction and use of Pod Casts, Smart Board, Online Streaming Media Presentation, Web Design, Blogging, Web Classroom Administration and Prezi pages.

Experience with Photoshop, computer based skills assessment software, and Apple software.

 

Hobbies, Interests, and Activities

I love teaching English. I enjoy reading mystery novels, young adult fiction,  and classics. Blogging and journaling are outlets for my creative writing. I love to go hiking and running downtown Hot Springs. Gardening, playing volleyball, playing my flute are the things I wish I had more time to do. I love taking classes and will likely continue to do so even after I finish my Master’s. Researching and creating lessons and units are a joy to me. Most importantly, I love working with kids on a daily basis.
